Art Gallery Apothiki | Nikiti, Sithonia
Theodoros Papagiannis has exhibited his work in 30 solo exhibitions and in many group exhibitions in Greece and in other countries. His work includes busts and statues of prominent personalities, medals, coins and large sculptural compositions. His sculptures stand in many public places in Greece and abroad, and are held in public and private collections of museums and galleries like the National Gallery of Greece, the North Museum, National Sculpture Gallery, Presidential Palace, Pierides Gallery, Thessaloniki Museum, Gallery of the National Bank Cultural Foundation and others.
Papagiannis always knew how to combine ephemerality with infinity, the history with the myth, politics with symbolism in his work, without resorting to easy slogans or clichéd representations. His forms emerging from the distant past and moving bravely forward, towards the future do not conceal, nor do they reveal but, they mainly signify. Their imposing presence and their enigma are their protection. Their defence against easy interpretations. These ideas have been preoccupying him for a long time and often forms them with different faces – masks, different contents but always with the same anguish about his homeland and its fate. The artist uses thirty oversized human figures.
