Snorkelling in Toroni

Snorkelling in Toroni

Bring your mask and snorkel and swim around the boats that are moored in the water towards the castle of Toroni. Here you will have the chance to see some wall foundations from the ancient agora. As you continue swimming around the peninsula and into the next bay, you can see large building stones that had fallen into the water, all evidence of the important civilization that existed in Toroni about 3.000 years ago.

The uniqueness in snorkelling in Toroni is that a large part of the ancient town's ruins is underwater.

If you snorkel in the harbour right under the anchored boats, you will find some wall foundation about 20 meters off the shore and another one about 40 meters offshore. These walls indicate where perhaps the shoreline existed in antiquity. Over the years, earthquakes and the rising of sea levels may be the reason why these sea walls are now covered with water.
